Former Brookland-Cayce and Clemson standout named Citadel head baseball coach

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Russell Triplett has played at a high level with Brookland-Cayce and Clemson before coaching at a high level as the head coach at Newberry College.

But after 14 seasons of leading that program, Triplett has been named the new head baseball coach at The Citadel. 

The all-time winningest coach at Newberry College, Triplett leaves that program with an overall record of of 418-278-1. He also helped lead the team to two South Atlantic Conference championships and a pair of appearances in the NCAA Division II baseball championship.
 
"The opportunity to take the helm of a program with as much history, tradition and pure grit as The Citadel is a dream come true," Triplett said in a statement.

"The entire process of interviewing for this position has been incredibly fulfilling, and I'd like to personally thank The Citadel's president, Gen. Walters, the Citadel Director of Athletics Mike Capaccio and every member of the search committee for putting their faith in my background, my experience and my vision. The Citadel ranks as one of those 'special places' within the college baseball community, and my entire family and I are thrilled to embrace the unique culture and dedicated alumni base that makes this institution exceptional."

Before taking over the program at Newberry College, Triplett served as the head assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at USC Upstate from 2008-2010, and prior to that he was a volunteer assistant at Clemson University.

Triplett replaces Tony Skole who was let go after seven seasons leading The Citadel program.
