Columbia Fireflies end season with community celebration

Roughly 5,000 fans were expected at the final game, where they enjoyed player autographs, fireworks, and a chance for kids to run the bases.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Columbia Fireflies wrapped up their 2024 season on Sunday, taking on the Charleston RiverDogs at Segra Park.

“It’s been a great season. We had tremendous support from the community," Columbia Fireflies Team President Brad Shank said. "Columbia has really embraced the fireflies ever since we’ve gotten here, and we’re truly grateful for that."

Officials estimated more than 5,000 fans would attend the team's 66th and final home game of the season. Some of the team's youngest fans got to run around the bases after the game ended.

“I really, I enjoy it because it lets the kids get interactive with everything,"  Candi Mitchum said. "They don’t just get to sit in the stands; they actually get to go out get to see fireworks; they get a chance of winning something that keeps them involved.”

Some fans also got autographs from the whole team. While this is the end of the baseball season, the team officials are looking ahead and thinking of ideas for the upcoming season.

“We are always looking for the next idea, something to keep it fresh, so people just have another reason to come out to the ballpark and enjoy,” Shank said.

The Segra Park will again host a holiday lights display for the community at the beginning of November.
