Furman football player hospitalized after practice

Officials at the university said Bryce Stanfield suffered a medical emergency during a morning workout at the stadium.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — A Furman University football player is in the hospital after suffering a medical emergency during an early morning workout.

The player, Bryce Stanfield, a junior defensive tackle and three-year letterman, was working out at the stadium when he suffered his emergency, according to head football coach Clay Hendrix.

"The thoughts and prayers of Furman's entire football program and university community are with Bryce and his family at this time," said Hendrix.

According to News19 sister-station 11Alive, Furman University President Elizabeth Davis told students on Wednesday that Stanfield is on life support and in critical condition. Stanfield is a junior defensive tackle on the team and a health science major.

Stanfield is from Acworth, Georgia, and has seen action in all 13 games this past fall, according to the university.

"Bryce’s parents are with him and have requested our prayers," President Davis said in a statement obtained by 11Alive.

Davis also urged students to contact counseling services for support but not gather at the hospital due to limited space.
