COLUMBIA, S.C. — Fresh off a three-game sweep of Florida, the South Carolina baseball team has achieved one of its highest rankings in nearly a decade.
According to this week's Baseball America Top 25, the Gamecocks move from #6 to #2, just behind top-ranked LSU. The last time Carolina was ranked this high by that publication, it was in 2014 when they hit the top spot early in that season.
The D1Baseball poll moved Carolina up sixth to third behind LSU and Wake Forest.
South Carolina is tied with Wake Forest for the nation’s best record at 34-6. The team is tied with Vanderbilt for most league wins with 13 and leads the SEC in winning percentage.
There is no midweek game for the Gamecocks as the players have exams. They will face Auburn in a three game series starting Friday night.
Carolina is at the top of the heap nationally in terms of RPI after the series sweep of a Florida team which came in ranked third in the country. The Gamecocks did not trail at the end of any inning the entire weekend and swept Florida for the second consecutive home series.
Petry honored again
South Carolina outfielder Ethan Petry was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season.
In the series against Florida, Petry broke the South Carolina freshman RBI record as he now has 64, surpassing the previous mark of 63 set by Justin Smoak. He also had two home runs in the first two games,
