Columbia basketball coaching legend passes away

Bobby Young won five state titles and more than 600 games in his career at Columbia High School.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Bobby Young, who led the Columbia Capitals girls basketball program to 641 victories and five state championships, has passed away at the age of 84.

Young was at Columbia High School for 38 years before retiring in 2020. On top of working courtside, Young also coached softball, track and field, and cross country.

In 2022, the gym at Columbia High School was named after him in a ceremony that brought former players and assistants back to the school for the unveiling of a sign that adorns the gymnasium wall with the inscription "Bobby R. Young Gymnasium".

Young is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Allen University Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Basketball Hall of Fame.

Bobby Young was 84.
