IRMO, S.C. — AJ Brand wanted to play quarterback, which proved to be a stronger lure than staying home.
The Irmo quarterback has committed to Virginia Tech, choosing the Hokies over South Carolina. Oregon State was also in the mix but not a true factor in the end.
South Carolina was recruiting Brand as a defensive back, while Virginia Tech recruited him to play quarterback.
Irmo's offense was one of the most powerful units in the state, and it was a big reason the Yellow Jackets advanced to the 4A Lower State championship game.
Playing for his father at Irmo, Brand set school records with 2,932 yards and 45 touchdowns. He rushed for 1,113 yards and 17 touchdowns, which allowed him to set new school records with 4,045 yards of total offense and 62 total touchdowns.
