Gilbert falls to West Oak 52-24 in the 3A state wrestling finals

The Indians from Gilbert America overcame a loss to Dreher in the regular season

COLUMBIA, S.C. — In the Class AAA state wrestling championship, West-Oak powered past Gilbert 52-24 to capture its third consecutive state wrestling state title and fifth in last eight years.

West Oak is led by former Lexington head coach Derek Strobel. One of his former assistants at Lexington was Mitch Hudson who is now the head coach at Gilbert, Hudson and Strobel worked together at Lexiington for 17 seasons before Strobel left to take the job at West Oak.

Gilbert has been incredibly consistent in recent years, having made six trips to the state semi-finals with four appearances in the state finals during that span.

But that elusive state championship is still out there for Gilbert who will renew the chase next year.
