CAYCE, S.C. — Senior defensive specialist Katie Silva brings a whole lot more to the court than just her volleyball skills for the Brookland-Cayce Bearcats. That's what she's been named the latest News19 Player of the Week, an award honoring outstanding student-athletes.
Her love for the game started in the 8th grade and hasn't stopped since.
"Whenever I have a bad day and I come in here I feel a lot happier because being around their energy I feed off of it so whenever they're really happy I feel happy," Silva said.
Katie is in the top four percent of her senior class and has lettered on the team for the past two years. Her coach, Lydia Wise told News19 she is a mentor to her teammates on and off the court
"She's really resilient, she's able to bounce back not too much worry about mistake so it's really positively to this team because she is a senior they're able to follow in her footsteps when you make a mistake you can just bounce back and let it go," said Wise.
Katie is expected to graduate in the spring of 2025 and will attend Clemson University where she plans on majoring in chemistry. Her dream is to become a forensic scientist.
"I'm very grateful because whenever you play you don't really think about how you're doing, you view yourself differently so it feels good to know that people actually see I'm doing good," Silva said.
