COLUMBIA, S.C. — The annual News19 Player of the Week Celebration took place Wednesday night with a pair of Midlands athletes being named Player of the Year and earning a $1,000 scholarship from Westinghouse, the title sponsor of the Player of the Week program.
Nicole Kelly is a member of the Gilbert girls soccer team and she has established herself as one of the top students at the school while maintaining a busy schedule of volunteering at a local veterinary clinic. Nicole will attend Clemson and major in veterinary science where her career goal is in line with her volunteering.
Jalen Swilley played football for the Fairfield Central Griffins, manning both lines of scrimmage.
That versatility caight the eye of Anderson University head coach Bobby Lamb who has built that program from scratch. The former Furman head coach is building that program from scratch and Jalen is a part of that effort.
Both Nicole and Jalen are News19 Players of the Year and both will be attending college in the Upstate.
