COLUMBIA, S.C. — This week, News19 visited Dreher High School to honor senior Rose Duncan, a standout player for the varsity volleyball team for three consecutive seasons.
As a leader on the Blue Devils varsity volleyball team, Duncan has excelled as a setter and takes pride in staying focused during her matches.
“Just enjoy every moment because I only have a few months of playing, so I just try to enjoy it while I have it,” Duncan said.
Dreher High's head varsity volleyball coach, Christen Bragg, praised Duncan for her leadership, particularly during the team’s summer practices.
“Our big focus over the summer was the culture of our program. Rose was the one heading up all the cheers and chants we do,” Bragg said. “She really brought everyone together and got them excited after every play, showing not only passion for the sport but for supporting each other, too.”
Duncan joined the varsity team as a sophomore, and her impact has already been felt this season. According to Bragg, Duncan’s ability to set the tone for matches has been key to their success.
“We played a game a couple weeks ago in a tournament where we actually won 25-0,” Bragg recalled. “In that set, she served us all the way to 25 and had 12 aces. That has to be a record somewhere!”
Duncan continues to excel off the court, maintaining a 4.76 GPA. She balances her athletic and academic responsibilities by staying organized.
“I do want to get into a good college, so when I’m not playing volleyball, I try to do my homework, stay on top of everything, and study. It can be pretty draining, but it works out,” Duncan said.
Following her senior volleyball season, Duncan plans to study secondary education in college and hopes to become a history teacher.
“It’s always been my favorite subject, and getting to share that with others would be fun. I want to teach people about it,” she said.
As one of the team’s most valued leaders on and off the court, Rose Duncan has been named News19’s Player of the Week.
