Bristol, CT (WLTX) - Former South Carolina Head Coach Lou Holtz is leaving ESPN after 10 years with the sports network.
The news was first reported by Sports Illustrated, who said the decision to leave was reached mutually.
"Lou brought a champion's perspective and a legacy of accomplishment to our coverage along with his distinctive style and humor," the network said in a statement to the magazine's website. "We appreciate his contributions and wish him all the best in the future."
"Lou enjoyed his time and friendships made at ESPN and looks forward to other opportunities in college football," Sandy Montag, the agent for Holtz, said in the report.
Holtz, who's 78, coached the Gamecocks from 1999 to 2004, retiring after the November 2004 Clemson game. Shortly after leaving the coaching ranks, he joined ESPN as an analyst and commentator. He became known for his "Dr. Lou" segment and his frequent clashes with fellow analyst Mark May on College Football Final.
During his coaching career, Holtz won 249 games, and led Notre Dame to the 1988 National Championship.
