COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina men's basketball guard Meechie Johnson is entering the transfer portal.

Johnson issued a statement to online sports website On3.com Monday, and then posted a link to the article and graphics announcing his decision on his verified Instagram page.

He thanked his friends and family,, as well as his coaches and professors, in announcing his decision. He also mentioned Gamecock head coach Lamont Paris.

"Coach Paris has been very impactful in my life and my development but all being said, I will be entering the transfer portal and will also considering testing the NBA waters," Johnson said.

Johnson, a junior, was the Gamecocks' leading scorer this past season, averaging just over 14.1 points per game, as well as 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists.  He  was a major part of a Carolina squad that made it back to the NCAA March Madness tournament for the first time in seven years.  USC was picked to finish last before the season began and was coming off a losing season, but the team won 15 more games this year.

Johnson is from Cleveland, Ohio and spent two years at Ohio State before transferring to the Gamecocks for the 2022-23 season.
