Clemson Makes Change at TE

Clemson Football making changes to their starting line.
Regarded for his blocking, Clemson tight end Jay Jay McCullough’s improvement as a receiver has earned him his first start.

CLEMSON – Clemson already has a new starter at quarterback. Freshman Deshaun Watson will make his first start on Saturday against North Carolina.

However, the shakeup will not end behind center.

"Let's see if we can't rattle some things. It doesn't have to be one position that everybody talks about," offensive coordinator Chad Morris said this morning after revealing that sophomore tight Jay Jay McCullough also will earn his first start Saturday.

"He's gotten better from week one, which he was the most physical guy week one," Morris said. "His role is going to continue to expand."

Despite playing behind sophomore Jordan Leggett and junior Stanton Seckinger through the first three games, McCullough led Clemson's tight ends with five receptions, 73 yards and a touchdown.

Leggett suffered a minor knee injury during the game at Florida State on Saturday. The following day, coach Dabo Swinney said the injury will not sideline Leggett this week.

According to Morris, the impetus for the switch was planted before the injury. McCullough has displayed the physicality that Leggett has lacked.

"Jordan's got to get more physical," Morris said. "That's our challenge to him. It can't be just about catching balls."

Seckinger, who also has battled back from injury, soared for a spectacular 19-yard snag near the goal line Saturday. However, McCullough still provides the best combination of receiver and bruiser, at least until senior starter Sam Cooper returns from the broken leg he suffered during warmups before the season opener Aug. 30 at Georgia.

Swinney said he expects Cooper to return next week against North Carolina State, although there still is a small chance Cooper could be available this week.
