USC tight ends coach hired as the head football coach at Murray State, while new Gamecock assistant Coley is on the premises

Jody Wright will head to the Bluegrass State after two seasons as the Gamecocks' tight ends coach. James Coley has arrived in Columbia as the newest assistant at USC

COLUMBIA, S.C. — After two seasons serving as the tight ends coach at South Carolina, Jody Wright has been named the new head football coach at Murray State in Kentucky.

Before Wright came to Columbia, he had a brief stint in the NFL, working as Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2019. Wright was a defensive assistant with the Giants in 2020 and an offensive assistant in 2021 before joining Shane Beamer's staff at South Carolina, Wright and Beamer worked together at Mississippi State when Wright was working as a graduate assistant and then Director of Football Operations in Starkville.

Wright was on the UAB staff in 2018 as assistant head coach/running game coordinator/offensive line coach. He has also worked under Nick Saban at Alabama as Director of Player Personnel.

Beamer has hired former Texas A&M tight ends coach/co-offensive coordinator James Coley although his role has not been defined just yet.

South Carolina is in the market for a running backs coach after the dismissal of Monterio Hardesty and a tight ends coach although with that being one of Coley's areas of expertise, he could easily slide into the opening created by Wright's exit.
