Cardoso earns conference and national awards

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina women’s basketball senior center Kamilla Cardoso's return from a two-game hiatus to compete in an Olympic qualifying event for her native Brazil saw her not miss a beat.

After helping Carolina earn wins at Tennesssee and home against Georgia, Cardoso was named SEC co-Player of the Week, Naismith Women’s College Player of the Week and was among the USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale National Players of the Week . 

Cardoso missed the Missouri and UConn games after representing her home country in FIBA Olympic Qualifying. She returned to lead the Gamecocks to a pair of history-making victories.

The win over Tennessee tied the SEC record for most consecutive regular season victories *(42) and then the record was broken Sunday with the victory over Georgia which was the 43rd consecutive victory in the league for regular season games.

Cardoso was the team’s top scorer and rebounder on the week, averaging 17.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 4.0 assists over the two wins. In the win at home over the Bulldogs, Cardoso recorded 16 points, a career-high tying 16 rebounds, a team-high five assists, three blocks and a career-high three steals. 

South Carolina returns to action Thursday at home against Alabama at 7 p.m.
