GREENVILLE, S.C. — The SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament will remain in Greenville through at least 2028, the SEC announced Wednesday
The three-year extension was announced Wednesday by the Southeastern Conference.
The Bon Secours Wellness Arena, which has a 15,000 capacity, is the site for this tournament which has been held in Greenville since 2019 with the exception of 2022.
“The City of Greenville and Bon Secours Wellness Arena have proven to be successful hosts of the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament and we are pleased to call Greenville home for three additional years,” said Greg Sankey, SEC commissioner.
“The city’s hospitality and organization combined with the quality of the arena make Greenville an ideal location to provide a memorable experience for SEC women’s basketball student-athletes, coaches and fans.”
In the history of the tournament, 14 cities have hosted the women's basketball conference championship games since it was created in 1980. After the 2028 season, Greenville will have hosted the most tournaments in the history of the SEC. When this new contract is completed, a total of 11 total championship games will have been played at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Dawn Staley has led South Carolina to three tournament titles in the last four seasons. Back in March, the Gamecocks narrowly avoided what would have spoiled an undefeated season. An uncontested three-pointer by Kamilla Cardoso at the buzzer lifted the Gamecocks to a 74-73 win over Tennessee in the tournament semi-finals. Carolina would defeat LSU 79-72 in the championship game in front of a mostly Garnet-friendly crowd in Greenville. That win marked the program's eighth SEC tournament title in the last 10 seasons.
