From garnet and blue to garnet and black, former S.C. State running back now carrying the ball for the Gamecocks

Jawarn Howell is expected to get plenty of repetitions in Saturday night's Spring Game.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Juwarn Howell had quite the freshman season last fall for South Carolina State.

The Mooresville, N.C. native was the Bulldogs’ leading rusher with 102 carries for 809 yards and seven touchdowns. He would earn FCS Freshman All-America, MEAC Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-MEAC honors as he led the conference in rushing.

But Howell piled up those statistics without the benefit of spring practice as he did not arrive on the S.C. State campus until June of 2023. However, he is now reaping the benefits of winter workouts and spring practice as he looks to make inroads on the South Carolina depth chart.

Howell and the group of healthy running backs who are available will be on the field Saturday night for the Garnet and Black Spring Game, looking to leave the coaches with a positive impressiion heading into the offseason.
