NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — Matt NeSmith delivered a Sunday charge at the ISCO Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
The former South Carolina golfer fired a 8-under 64 to finish at 22-under, walking off the 18th green at Champions at Keene Trace Golf Club around 5:00 p.m.
With a number of golfers still on the course and within just a few shots off the lead, it was expected someone would pull off a 23-under score and relegate NeSmith to another close finish.
However, four other golfers walked off the course at 22-under and that meant a five-man playoff, the third time in the last four years the ISCO Championship was not decided in regulation.
NeSmith had a chance to win the tournament on the first playoff hall but his 8-footer for birdie slid by the hole.
On the third playoff hole, Harry Hall recorded an improbable birdie at the par 3 ninth hole by chipping off the green from 45 feet away.
NeSmith would settle for a tie for second which matches his career best finish on the PGA Tour.
