COLUMBIA — Coach Steve Spurrier, said junior running back Mike Davis, who has had a myriad of minor injuries during fall practice, may not be ready to start in South Carolina's opening game against Texas A&M.
Davis has not practiced since injuring his ribs in the Gamecocks Saturday morning practice, which led to Spurrier's pronouncement.
"Mike Davis has been hurt and hasn't practiced all week," said Spurrier. "I don't know if he will be able to start or not."
If Davis is held out of the Gamecocks opener against the Aggies, the coaching staff will have the option of starting either Brandon Wilds or Shon Carson, both juniors. Redshirt freshman David Williams also is ready to play.
Wilds had three 100-yard rushing games as a freshman starting in relief of an injured Marcus Lattimore.
Davis, who missed the first few days of fall practice with a slight hamstring pull, was named to the preseason All-Southeastern Conference second team.
"We've got Brandon Wilds," said Spurrier. "He's ready to go. We're in good shape there."
