Dave Davis has stepped down as the head men's basketball coach at Newberry College after nine seasons. He is joining the staff at Winthrop University as associate head coach.
In his nine years at Newberry, he won 143 games and there was a stretch when he recorded seven straight winning seasons and before that, it had been 31 years since Newberry had had back-to-back winning seasons.
So, clearly Davis injected some energy into the program with his up-tempo attack where 100-point games were not uncommon and there were seven seasons where Newberry led the South Atlantic Conference in scoring.
Before taking over at Newberry, Davis was the head coach at Pfeiffer, Barton and Warren Wilson.
He has won 486 games in his career and now for the first time in his career, Davis will be coaching on the Division I level with the Winthrop Eagles in the Big South Conference.
"The Newberry College experience was incredible and one I never thought I would leave," Davis said in a statement to News19.
"Wonderful people on campus and in the community and lifelong friends."
Davis started his career as a volunteer assistant at Pfeiffer College for Bobby Lutz who went on to become the all-time winningest coach at Charlotte. It will also mark his first job on the Division I level.
"The opportunity to work with Pat Kelsey and his staff at Winthrop was unbelievable and the complete reason we made this move," Davis added.
"The more we talked, the more excited Pam and I got to join a first class coach, husband, father and mentor to young people. Our philosophies align perfectly as we believe in family, hard work, accountability and we both love our players like they are our own. While I consider myself one of the most passionate coaches of all time, I will be challenged daily to keep up with the pace of Coach Kelsey. The staff he has assembled amazing and these young coaches have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome. I cannot wait to get started."
