COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former South Carolina linebacker Ernest Jones was more than happy to take a late night phone call from the West Coast. Jones was taken in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. Jones was the 103rd pick in the draft.
In 22 games at South Carolina, Jones was one shy of 200 career tackles. He has led the team in that category for the last two seasons, putting up 86 tackles in 2020 and 97 in 2019.
Jones is the highest Gamecock linebacker drafted since John Abraham was selected with the 13th overall pick in the first round by the New York Jets in 2000.
The Waycross, Georgia native left school after three seasons to enter the NFL Draft and that decision has paid off as he was one of the last players in the third round to get the call and that call came from the 818 area code.
