Cleveland, OH (WLTX) - Cleveland Browns quarterback Connor Shaw says he's been medically cleared to resume his football career.

The former South Carolina Gamecocks star tweeted Friday, "great way to start 2016. 100% medically cleared. Thank you for the encouragement and prayers. Isaiah 40:31."

Shaw damaged a ligament in his thumb during a preseason game back in August. He had surgery on his hand a few weeks later, and the team place him on injury reserve, meaning he would be ineligible for the rest of the year.

Shaw started the last game of the 2014 season for the Browns, and the team had been encouraged by his play in the preseason and in practices. The Browns have had difficulty finding any consistency at the quarterback position this season, in part due to second-year quarterback Johnny Manziel's struggles with injuries of his own and off-the-field issues.

Shaw starred for three seasons at South Carolina, ending up as the school's all-time leader in career victories, sporting a 27-5 record.

During his USC career, Shaw led the team to three straight 11-win seasons for the first time in school history. In his senior campaign, he had 2,447 passing yards with 24 touchdowns and one interception. He also had 558 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.

He signed a NFL free-agent contract in May of 2014 with the Browns.
