COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Gamecock flag has once again been hoisted atop the dome of the South Carolina State House to celebrate another national title for the women's basketball team.
Sunday night, the Gamecock banner could be seen below the South Carolina state flag and the U.S. flag on the pole that sits on the top of the capitol building. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, himself a USC alum, announced that the flag would be raised above the building.
South Carolina defeated Iowa 87-75 Sunday in the national title game in Cleveland. It completed a perfect season for the team at 38-0, the first in program history, and only the 10th in women's college basketball all-time.
It's also the third title program in South Carolina women's basketball history and the second in the last three years.
It's become custom now for the flag of the college that wins a national championship to be flown over the State House. It was raised for USC's other two basketball titles, Clemson's two football championship, and Coastal Carolina's baseball championship.
And the Gamecocks will have a victory celebration with fans back here in Columbia to mark the team's national championship. A university spokesperson told News19 the doors to the Colonial Life Arena will open at 12:30 p.m. Monday, with the celebration expected to begin at roughly 2 p.m.
There's still no word on when a championship parade will take place, but Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann announced on social media that it is in the works. In 2022, the parade was held 10 days after the team won the title.
USC became the first team to go undefeated since UConn in 2016 and just the 10th team all time to go through a season unblemished. Including last season, when they went undefeated until the Final Four, USC is a staggering 74-1 over the last two seasons. When you add their last title run in 2022, they're 108-3 in three seasons.
