Chinese Peng Shuai upended the former Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli in 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 fashion at this clay-court French Open tune-up.
Meanwhile, Kanepi resumed her winning ways in Portugal with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over France's Kristina Mladenovic on Day 2.
Kanepi defeated Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in last year's finale in Estoril.
And playing for the second time in three days, former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone beat Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino once again, this time 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in a first-round affair. The veteran Italian also bested Dominguez Lino, in straight sets, in a championship match in Marrakech on Sunday.
Third-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova avoided an upset by handling Israeli qualifier Shahar Peer, 6-4, 6-4.
In other first-round play in Oeiras, Spanish qualifier Estrella Cabeza Candela overcame French qualifier Aravane Rezai 5-7, 6-1, 6-3; Romanian Monica Niculescu whipped Austrian Tamira Paszek 6-1, 6-3; Swiss Romina Oprandi leveled Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-3, 6-2; and Kazakhstani qualifier Galina Voskoboeva dismissed Swede Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 6-4.
This week's Portugal Open champion will pocket $42,000.
