COLUMBIA, S.C. — For the second time in four months, AESC has announced the lithium-ion electric vehicle battery manufacturing operations in Florence, SC, will be expanding and adding new jobs.
On Tuesday, March 26, representatives from AESC said the company will be investing another $1.5 billion to expand operations in order to extend an existing with BMW to supply EV batteries not only to BMW Upstate operations but to provide EV battery components to BMW Group's Mexico Assembly Operations. AESC established operations at Florence's 1,000-acre Global Technology and Commerce Park in 2022 and entered a partnership with BMW to produce batteries for the auto manufacturing company's electric vehicles made at Plant Spartanburg. The new, second facility is expected to be online in 2027 and will create 1,080 new jobs.
Since coming to South Carolina, AESC has invested a total investment of $3.12 billion and supports 2,700 new jobs in the area.
The state of South Carolina's Joint Bond Review Committee and the State Fiscal Accountability Authority authorized the issuance of up to an additional $111 million in state general economic development bonds in support of the expanded project, as well as the costs of issuance. The bond proceeds will be used to offset the costs of a county-owned warehouse building, site preparation, on-site roads, off-site road and water improvements, and additional expansion of the training center that will serve both manufacturing facilities at the Florence site.
