A Google Spokesperson made the following statement in response to a request for comment:
The vast majority of users who edit our maps provide great contributions, such as mapping places that have never been mapped before, or adding new business openings or address changes. We're sorry for this inappropriate user-created content; we're working to remove it quickly. We also learn from these issues, and we're constantly improving how we detect, prevent and handle bad edits.
Google says they're working on ways to improve their system in place to prevent, detect, and remove edits such as these.
Users can let us know about these by clicking the 'Report a problem' button in the bottom corner of the map so we can fix it quickly if necessary.
The origin of much content included on Google Maps is, similarly to Wikipedia entries, user contributed. The typical user contribution is in most cases place-name changes, slight adjustments to the latitude-longitude location of a residence or business, or additional information for a location such as business website, phone number, and the like.
Original Article
Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- If ever there were any question Google's programmers have some pent-up animosity for Apple, look no further than Rawalpindi, Pakistan inside Google Maps.
There you'll find, at a certain zoom level, the image of the Android robot logo, um, "relieving its' self" upon the distinctive Apple logo.
The image is only visible by looking on the Google Maps website, but not in any other form of displaying the map.
How do we know?
We tried to embed the map in this article, but it displays without the image visible.
But head on over to Google Maps following this link (https://goo.gl/maps/eLA1d) and you'll see what we're talking about.
Ed Note: Update at 1:45pm: Google has Removed the image from that map location.
When you zoomed in and out to a certain level, it stays. Beyond a certain point, it disappears.
