Richland One School District: Some employees' personal data exposed internally; investigation underway

Authorities said the data was only visible to other employees and not to the general public.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — The Richland One School District is alerting its staff that some employees' personal information was recently visible to other employees.

The district stated on Thursday that information such as social security numbers and addresses were made visible to other district employees but not the general public. The district said an employee who accessed the employee information portal "reported being able to see another district employee's information."

The data was visible on the employee information portal known as "MUNIS Self-Serve," the district said.

"After the issue was reported, the site was shut down by the district and the vendor while the matter was being investigated," the school district said.

Now, the district is working with the vendor, Tyler Technologies, to determine the number of employees who could see the personal information and whose information was visible. The school district said employees impacted by the incident would be notified, and plans were in place to address the concerns of those employees.

The Richland One School District said it's unclear how long the information was visible before an employee reported it.
