NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities are warning that a damaged fiber line may impact cell phones in at least three South Carolina counties on Thursday.
The Newberry County Sheriff's Office reported that a major fiber line was cut between Prosperity and Chapin and has affected "many cell phone towers" in the area. This, the sheriff's office said, has led to outages in Newberry, Saluda, and Lexington Counties.
Sheriff Lee Foster told News19 around noon that it appeared that the majority of the repair work had been completed. He said the information came in from AT&T earlier and that a rodent is currently suspected as the culprit.
Foster also added that there were also reports of internet service and even some landlines impacted by the outage. He said anyone who is still having issues should contact their service providers.
News19 is requesting additional information from AT&T regarding the outage. Check back for updates as they become available.
