COLUMBIA, S.C. — The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported an earthquake in South Carolina early Friday morning.
The 2.2 magnitude earthquake was about 3.5 miles east-southeast of Elgin in Kershaw County. This is the same area that has experienced earthquake swarms over the past couple of years.
According to a post by the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, the quake happened early Friday morning at 3:16 a.m.
No damage was reported, but there were over two dozen reports of people feeling this earthquake as of early Friday morning.
South Carolina has a history of minor earthquake activity. The largest and most damaging earthquake on record is the 1886 Charleston earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 7.3. That quake, felt from New York to Cuba, killed at least 60 people and damaged thousands of buildings.
