Small earthquake reported north of Summerville on Saturday

The earthquake fell below the threshold typically felt by people but happened in an area just south of I-26 near the Sangaree community.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — South Carolina residents near the coast may have felt a slight rumble this afternoon due to a small earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports a magnitude 1.7 earthquake just southwest of Sangaree, South Carolina, an unincorporated community near Summerville and on the border between Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

People rarely feel earthquakes below magnitude 2.5 unless they are particularly close to the epicenter. The latest quake was roughly three miles underground, just south of I-26 and less than a mile west of Royle Road.

This earthquake happened in an area of the state historically known for them near Charleston, though Elgin recently saw a year-long swarm of more than 80 small quakes through the end of 2022.

The state also felt another quake this week, with a magnitude 1.93 earthquake reported in Pickens County on Thursday.
