KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Another week brings yet another earthquake to Kershaw County. On Sunday morning, the Lugoff and Elgin areas experienced another rumble that a few people reportedly felt.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was centered around 3:20 a.m. near Whiting Way and Rio Lane along I-20 - the same general area as many in recent years. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 2.2 and, by mid-morning, was reportedly felt by a little over 20 people, according to the USGS self-reporting page.
The earthquake is on the weaker side, with magnitudes under 2.5 generally being too small for people to feel. The region had previously been the epicenter of a swarm of dozens of earthquakes in 2022 before falling relatively quiet in 2023, with only about 10 registered in the area. So far in 2024, the area has already felt six shakes, the largest of which had a magnitude of 2.7 and was reported on March 9.
The most recent earthquake before Sunday was a week earlier, on Mach 17. It had a magnitude of 1.9.
