JEFFERSON, S.C. — After weeks of relative silence, South Carolina has once again felt an earthquake - but not in the usual places.
Preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey suggests that a magnitude 2.4 earthquake rattled the land roughly 4.3 miles west-northwest of Jefferson, South Carolina in Chesterfield County around 7:40 p.m.
While the specific location and strength are subject to change, the earthquake has been reviewed and appears to be in a mostly wooded area behind an industrial operation near the Lynches River and what maps show appears to be an industrial operation south of Hwy. 601.
The magnitude 2.4 earthquake is on the lower end of earthquakes that can be felt by the average person.
Before this earthquake, the most recent was in the area of the Elgin-Lugoff swarm and was roughly a magnitude of 1.9. It happened on Jan. 20.
