Self-driving robots are popping up around USC's campus

The robots are catching attention across campus, as the six-wheeled visitors are out delivering food.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — All eyes are on the robots at the University of South Carolina

This week the school rolled out new food delivery robots in partnership with Grub Hub

Students like Rishi Desai tell us they've been noticing them all around campus.

"Yeah I saw them yesterday, just going around, it's kind of funny," he adds, "I don't really know what they're trying to do with these things but it's just funny seeing them try to pass around people. Whenever somebody walks in front of it, they're just so confused."

We reached out to the school for more information and were told the autonomous, self-driving robots are officially on campus and helping deliver food. USC says the robots will only be serving food on campus grounds, and will cost those ordering, a small delivery fee.

Grub Hub told us in a statement, "Robots are a great fit for college campuses since those environments are notoriously difficult for cars to navigate due to one-way streets and areas on campus that don’t allow cars. Robots can get to hard-to-reach areas, which makes them a natural fit for campuses"

Friday afternoon, we ran into Emily George and Sarah Gross, two freshmen on campus as they picked up their food from the robots.

"I have to do stuff and it'll be here by the time I'm done," George adds, "I thought it was pretty cool, we thought it was funny. Yesterday we said 'it's like a little pet walking around campus."

The robots drove down the sidewalk, taking a stop at the crosswalk, and eventually ending at their building. The girls pressed a button on their app and the robot opened up with their food inside.

"Yeah, the convenience is good," says Gross

Desai does tell us he worries about how students might treat the robots.

"If anything, I think we're going to cause the traffic jams for them probably because we can walk around them but they get confused when  they see people."

USC says they plan to host a rollout and presentation early next week.
