Wrong-way crash on I-77 near Columbia leaves one person dead

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a wrong-way crash involving a car and a tractor-trailer

COLUMBIA, S.C. — One person is dead after a Thursday morning vehicle crash on I-77 involving a car and tractor-trailer.

According to Lance Corporal Brittany Glover with the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP), the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near mile marker 12, not far from the exit to Forest Drive.

Glover said a 1997 Freightliner tractor-trailer was heading north on I-77, and a 2002 Mazda was traveling south in the northbound lanes when they collided. The driver of the Mazda died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the other tractor-trailer was not injured.

The Richland County Coroner's Office hasn't yet released the name of the victim. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
