LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified a driver who died after hitting the back of a tractor-trailer in the early morning hours on Saturday.
According to Master Trooper Brian Lee, the crash happened around 4 a.m. as both a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer and a 1999 Lincoln Navigator were heading south on U.S. Hwy. 321 near Phaeton Drive.
Lee said the tractor-trailer slowed down to turn into a nearby parking lot. However, the driver of the Navigator was unable to stop in time, hitting the back of the larger truck.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said that the driver of the Navigator, later identified as 40-year-old Robert Adams Jr. of Columbia, died at the scene from injuries he sustained in the crash.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash and, while not able to release many additional details, did confirm that both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time.
