Fatal interstate crash claims driver's life in Aiken County: Investigation underway

The driver left the road into the median and hit a tree, officials said.

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — A driver has died following an interstate crash in Aiken County on Sunday afternoon.

Lance Corporal Brittany Glover with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 1:26 p.m. on I-20 near mile marker 35 - or eight miles west of Wagener.

Glover said the single vehicle involved in the crash, a 2014 Kia Optima, was heading east on the interstate when it left the road to the left and went into the median where it struck a tree.

The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle and died at the crash scene.

Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said the vehicle burst into flames after the crash and that the driver sustained thermal injuries. He said that a positive identification would come after an autopsy and notification of the victim's family.
