3 dead, 1 injured after Amtrak train hits vehicle in North Charleston

Authorities said the train was carrying hundreds of passengers when the collision occurred.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — North Charleston Police and railroad officials are investigating in the aftermath of a deadly train accident that occurred early Saturday morning.

The North Charleston Fire Department reports that the call came in around 2:30 a.m. to reports of an accident on Remount Road involving a vehicle and an Amtrak passenger train.

Arriving officers found the vehicle heavily damaged and off the roadway when they arrived. They also found four people near the vehicle that they believed were inside when it was hit.

Despite the quick actions of first responders, three of the victims were declared dead at the scene. Another person was treated by firefighters and taken to an area hospital. That person's condition wasn't released.

The fire department said the Amtrak train was carrying as many as 500 passengers at the time of the accident but said there were no reported injuries among them. The train is still being surveyed for any major damage.

As both North Charleston Police and CSX continue their investigation, the Remount Road railroad crossing will be blocked. No clearing time was provided.
