Fiery crash under investigation on I-20; driver not yet identified

Authorities say the car left the road, struck a sign, then trees before catching on fire.

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — The Aiken County Coroner's Office is investigating a deadly crash where a car caught fire after leaving I-20 on Wednesday.

Coroner Darryl Ables said the crash happened before 3 p.m. near mile marker 6, just inside the South Carolina border. Ables said a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant was heading west when the car left the right side of the road, hit a traffic sign, and multiple trees. Ables said the vehicle then caught fire, and the driver died at the scene.

He said the driver's identity isn't known, given the burns he sustained in the crash. An autopsy in Newberry County is planned to help answer that question. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is also investigating the crash.
