LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — The Lexington County Coroner's Office has identified a man who died in a late-night construction accident on I-26 as a Columbia man.
According to a statement from Coroner Margaret Fisher, the incident happened in the area of the 130-mile marker on I-26 eastbound - which is not far from the Calhoun County border - around 11:15 p.m. on Friday.
Fisher said the victim, 24-year-old Ramon Ortiz-Medina, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries he sustained from heavy equipment. The coroner's office didn't provide any specifics regarding the type of equipment that was being used at the time.
An autopsy has since been scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina for Monday as the coroner's office is continuing its own investigation into the death.
