NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — A crash on I-26 in Newberry County has long since cleared, but the investigation into how it happened continues.
The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-26 near Exit 72 to Whitmire on Saturday afternoon. While many details are still limited, the Newberry County Sheriff's Office confirmed on the same afternoon that there were "many" injuries that also led to two medical helicopters being called to land on the interstate.
Sheriff Lee Foster thanked several agencies for their help including fire and rescue units from multiple stations, emergency medical services, animal control, and the Newberry Police Department.
He added that the crash is now being investigated "as a possible criminal act and as a traffic accident."
