NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Drivers along I-26 in Newberry County are once again able to travel east after a major shutdown overnight.
Both the Newberry County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol announced that a tanker had overturned late Saturday night.
Sheriff Lee Foster announced around 9:30 p.m. that the tanker overturned in the area of Exit 85 to Little Mountain. Foster said the truck was carrying ethanol. In a later update, he confirmed that the highly flammable substance had begun leaking which added to complications in clearing the scene.
As a result of the crash, a lengthy detour was put into place. Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said that drivers had to exit at 85 east and take a right onto SC-202 and then a left onto US-76 before eventually heading to Columbia Avenue and back onto I-26.
Sheriff Foster said that Parr Road was also closed but has since been reopened.
