Garners Ferry crash kills one outside of Columbia

Authorities say one vehicle rear-ended another about 10 miles outside of the capital city.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports one person dead after a two-vehicle collision on Saturday night in Richland County.

According to Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell, the crash happened just after 10 p.m. on Garners Ferry Road near Watermelon Hill Road roughly 10 miles east of Columbia.

Tidwell said that a 2016 Ford F-150 was heading west on the highway when a 2015 GMC Acadia rear-ended it sending both off the road. The GMC overturned into the median and the Ford ran off the road into the median.

The GMC driver ultimately died from their injuries but the four occupants of the Ford were uninjured, Tidwell said.

No additional details regarding the circumstances were available at the time. The Highway Patrol is now handling the investigation. The deceased victim's name has not yet been released.
