NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — The Newberry County Coroner's Office has identified a 28-year-old man killed in a head-on collision on Wednesday morning as the investigation into the crash continues.
According to the Coroner Laura Kneece, 28-year-old Calvin J. Anstey of Irmo was killed in a crash that happened on U.S. Highway 176 near New Hope Church Road.
According to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 6:35 a.m. one mile west of Pomaria. Based on preliminary results, investigators believe a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado was heading east on Highway 176 when it was struck by a 2018 Toyota Corolla, driven by Anstey, that was heading west but had traveled into the eastbound lanes.
Kneece said Anstey was wearing his seatbelt but died in the collision. The driver of the other vehicle was injured and taken by emergency medical services to an area hospital for treatment. Details regarding the surviving driver's injuries were not made available in the highway patrol's preliminary report.
Authorities also haven't said how Anstey ended up in the opposing lane as their investigations continue.
