Woman hospitalized after semi-truck's trailer falls from overpass, hitting her Jeep

FHP said the semi-truck driver was driving too fast to safely navigate the curve in the road.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving a semi-truck Monday in Hillsborough County.

It happened shortly after noon when the truck driver, identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as a 31-year-old man from Tampa, was going northbound on the Interstate 75 ramp to Interstate 4.

At the same time, a driver of a Jeep, identified by FHP as a 61-year-old woman from Lutz, was going westbound on U.S. Highway 92, more commonly referred to as Hillsborough Avenue.

The left side of the semi-truck collided with an inside concrete barrier, causing the trailer to overturn, FHP described. The trailer then fell onto Hillsborough Avenue, hitting the Jeep.

FHP said the semi-truck driver was driving too fast to safely navigate the curve in the road. The driver was cited for failure to maintain lane.

The off-ramp's left lane was blocked for several hours but has since reopened. Chopper footage, FDOT cameras and 10 Tampa Bay's crews captured footage of the aftermath. Crews removed the trailer from the road around 3:45 p.m.
