COLUMBIA, S.C. — Motorists take note: Phase 2 of South Carolina Department of Transportation's I-77 bridge project is to begin Friday evening and will close all southbound lanes of I-77 between Bluff Road and I-26.
Lanes will close beginning at 9 p.m. April 14 and will remain closed until Sunday, April 23 (9 days total). The marked detour route is approximately 20 miles long, using SC 277 to I-20 West, then taking Exit 64-A for I-26 toward Charleston.
If you are planning on attending the Black and Garnet football game on Saturday April 15 Gamecock Athletics has some route suggestions.
If you normally take I-77 south toward Charleston or Greenville0Spartanburg to get to Williams Brice they suggest you either take Assembly or Huger Street to Elmwood Ave toward I-26 to the 1-20/1-26 interchange.
Or they say you can take I-77 northbound SC277, then take exit 6A for !-26 toward Charleston or exit 64-B for I-26 to Greenville/Spartanburg.
SCDOT is replacing the bridge decks over the Congaree River -- work includes removing old concrete, pouring new concrete spans, and creating a new smooth driving surface.
Phase 1 replaced bridge decks on the northbound side of I-77 and took 9 days to complete.
Phase 2 should also be completed within 9 days, weather permitting. In addition to work on the southbound lanes, the traffic pattern along US 378/Garners Ferry and Leesburg roads has been slightly altered to alleviate congestion getting on to I-77.
