Five dead in South Carolina interstate crash; SCHP investigating

Authorities said the crash killed all the occupants of one vehicle and wounded the driver of another.

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say five people died on Saturday night following a crash involving multiple vehicles.

Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. on I-26 and involved a 2004 Honda sedan, a 2022 Toyota sedan and a commercial vehicle transport truck, also known as a car hauler.

Investigators said the crash happened near mile marker 12 when the car hauler struck the Toyota on the westbound side of the interstate. The hauler then crossed the cable barrier, traveled into the eastbound lanes, and was hit by the Honda sedan.

Miller said all five occupants of the Honda sedan died. The driver of the car hauler was taken by emergency medical services personnel to Spartanburg Regional Hospital. The driver of the Toyota wasn't injured.

The deceased victims haven't been publicly identified, authorities said. Miller said the crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
