IRMO, S.C. — Police in the Town of Irmo are handling multiple accidents as drivers detour off of I-26 due to current traffic jams.
Traffic maps show the main incident to be a crash on I-26 eastbound near Exit 104 South which has caused a significant backup on the highway. However, police said that the detour of vehicles onto secondary roadways such as Broad River Road has caused parts of Irmo to be inundated with traffic - perhaps more so than usual on a Friday afternoon.
As a result, the agency has reported multiple collisions including one on Lake Murray Boulevard where police believe the driver's accelerator may have malfunctioned, launching the vehicle into seven others.
The department didn't go into any detail about the other incidents on roads in the town but suggested drivers may find themselves suddenly waiting at some point on their trips. If that happens, they urge drivers to stay calm and be cautious.
