Some lanes of Sunset Boulevard in Lexington reopen after bucket truck crash

Lexington Police said both inbound lanes are now open and outbound lanes are merged into one so Dominion Energy can continue working.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — Authorities in Lexington had positive news for commuters late Friday with several lanes of Sunset Boulevard - closed for hours due to a major crash involving a bucket truck - opening ahead of schedule.

Traffic in both directions had initially been blocked at Hope Ferry Road following a mid-day crash, police said. And there was concern that the road may not completely reopen before midnight.

But, in an update provided around 7:30 p.m., the Lexington Police Department said that both inbound lanes are now open on the heavily-traveled highway. Outbound traffic is also partially open, with two lanes being merged into one to allow Dominion Energy and other companies to repair damage from the original wreck.

Police said the original wreck was caused by a driver in a bucket truck "with an improperly lifted bucket" that caught the lines and damaged power poles at the intersection. Several vehicles were also damaged by the falling power lines and debris that followed.

The driver has since been cited for driving under suspension and striking a fixed object.
