Driver resigns from Lexington One after school bus crash involving tanker truck

Authorities said several children were on the bus at the time, and more than a dozen were taken to an area hospital, where they were treated and released.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A Lexington One bus driver involved in a crash while transporting students weeks earlier has resigned.

According to a spokesperson for the school district, the driver resigned in June. Court records show that he was charged with disregarding a stop sign and has paid a $232.50 fine.

The crash happened on May 25 at the intersection of Pond Branch Road and A.C. Bouknight Road near Gilbert. A nearby security camera video showed the school bus coming to a stop before rolling into the path of an oncoming tanker trunk.

The tanker struck the rear of the bus with enough power to lift part of the bus off the ground briefly.

Authorities said several children were on the bus at the time, and more than a dozen were taken to an area hospital, where they were treated and released.

The driver was put on administrative leave after the crash. The case against the driver went before a judge in traffic court on June 27, according to court records.
