COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities say a "major gas leak" has been capped and roadblocks have been lifted at South Beltline Boulevard and Rosewood Drive.
Columbia fire and police officials said that South Beltline Boulevard to Devine Street, Rosewood Drive to Garners Ferry Road, and Azalea to South Beltine Boulevard have been shut down due to the gas line break, which fire officials said was the result of a vehicle crashing into a gas line pump station.
Columbia Police said that the occupants of the vehicle involved in the crash have been taken to an area hospital but their condition was not known. The officer who first responded to the gas leak was also checked out by emergency medical services as a precaution and has been given an "all clear."
Dominion Energy has since been able to fix the gas leak and air quality is being checked in the area. Police did confirm that some residents in the immediate area were asked to leave their homes.
Columbia Fire officials said roadways closures have been lifted but police are on the scene assisting with traffic. Drivers should still use caution in the area.
